A black and white photo of the Old Church
The Old Church is the cornerstone of Catholic faith in Sikka.

Sikka Regency has several historical relics in the form of traditional settlements and colonial buildings. One of them is an old church located in Sikka Village, which is known as the Old Church of Sikka. This church is included in the category of buildings from the colonial era in 1890. Until now, The Old Church of Sikka is still carrying out its function as a place of worship, but has experienced many problems and change in physical appearance because it is weathered by age.

The Church still stands strong over many years

The history of the entry of Catholicism in Sikka began around the 1500's when a descendant of the King of Sikka named Mo'ang Alesu met King Worilla of Malaka named Agustinus da Gama and was finally invited to be baptized in Catholicism and was taught about religion and laws. Mo'ang Alesu's name was changed to Don da Silva. Then he asked Agustinus da Gama to go to Sikka and teach religion there. His arrival was welcomed by the people of Sikka and since then he has taught Catholicism and helped organize the government.

The condition of the Church is still very well maintained. The beautiful gleaming glass windows reflect light into the Church. Then on the walls of the Church were also installed paintings with the motifs of woven Sikka cloth. This Church is not only a place of prayer, but also a cultural site as evidence of the entry of Catholicism in Sikka.
